hi, overriding dispose() lets you cancel the asynchronous calls before calling super.dispose(). for a Stream, the .listen() is returning a StreamSubscription that you can cancel(), and for a Future it's a bit more complicated, with CancelableOperation/CancelableCompleter.

Yes, you need to have in mind that you need to do it manually. Flutter does not do it for you, even though that State object is not in the tree anymore.
